It is right around this time every year that we are looking for ways to use some of the extra blueberries from our garden. Thankfully, my wife and I like to drink, and the blueberries pair perfectly with one of her favorite libations. For these Blueberry Moscow Mules we make a simple blueberry syrup that we then add to our classic Moscow Mule recipe. Add a little ice and some more fresh blueberries, and it makes for a perfect cocktail on these hot summer days.

Making a Homemade Blueberry Moscow Mule
Gather your Moscow Mule ingredients
For these Blueberry Moscow Mules you will need ginger beer, fresh blueberries, sugar, water, Russian water (vodka), and a couple limes.
Since this is such a simple cocktail you want to be certain to use high quality ingredients. Fresh blueberries and fresh squeezed lime juice are a must. Also find a high quality Ginger Beer, and don't go bottom shelf on the vodka.
Make the Blueberry Syrup
The first step in making these fantastic Blueberry Moscow Mules, is to make a simple blueberry syrup. The syrup recipe is scaled down to provide just about the perfect amount for 2 Blueberry Moscow Mules, and should be completed a little bit ahead of time so the syrup has time to cool. Of course you can made more of the blueberry syrup and store it in the refrigerator for a couple weeks so you have some on hand.
To make the syrup, first add the water, blueberries, and sugar to a sauce pan and bring to a brief boil, then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring and gently crushing the blueberries occasionally. The syrup for this recipe will still be fairly watery, so do not aim to get a thick, viscous syrup.
Once the syrup is done simmering, strain it into a bowl or container. Chill the blueberry syrup until needed.

Mixing the Blueberry Moscow Mule
To complete your blueberry Moscow Mule first juice your lime. If desired, slice an additional lime to use for garnish.
Divide the ingredients between 2 glasses (copper mugs are traditional). Fill with crushed ice and stir to combine. We recommend avoiding using a shaker to mix the drink, as the carbonation in the ginger beer can cause quite a mess.
To help estimate the amounts needed, each Blueberry Moscow Mule should get ½ a can/bottle of the ginger beer, 2 standard shot glasses of vodka, 2 shots of blueberry syrup, and half of the fresh lime juice (about a scant 1 shot each). Garnish with a lime wedge, blueberries, and a sprig of mint.
Enjoy!
