Spring is here and for us that means more nights having fun outside with the kids, getting the garden started, and preparing for the summer. It also means we love to take advantage of the cool but comfortable nights around the fire pit. For us a nice red sangria is the perfect adult beverage to enjoy while the kids roast marshmallows over the fire. This Blackberry Red Wine Sangria is one of our favorite versions of this iconic Spanish drink. It also has the added benefit of being 100% of my fruit intake for the week.

Making the Blackberry Red Sangria
Sangria is super easy to make and can be customized with your favorite fruits. For this version you will want some Spanish red wine like a Tempranillo, or other red wine from the Rioja region of Spain. You can also feel free to use your favorite red. You will also need orange juice, blackberry brandy, liquid cane sugar, club soda, and about 1-2 cups of your favorite fruits. We typically do a mixture of blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, pear and apple, but you can use whatever is in season.
Have some extra blackberries? Try our Fresh Blackberry Slump and Southern Comfort Blackberry Bramble Style Arnold Palmer.
To make the Spanish Red Wine Sangria with Blackberries add the wine, blackberry brandy, liquid cane sugar, orange juice, and fruit in a pitcher or other beverage container. If you can not find liquid cane sugar, you can replace it with an equal amount of white sugar.
Stir the sangria well and gently muddle some of the fruit. Place the sangria in the refrigerator overnight to allow the flavors to develop.
Serving the Blackberry Red Wine Sangria
When you are ready to drink, pour the red sangria into wine glasses or your favorite adult beverage glassware. Top with a splash of club soda and enjoy.
Blackberry Red Sangria pairs perfectly with Spanish dishes like our Authentic Seafood Paella or Grilled Bacon Wrapped Dates: Devils On Horseback. It also works well with other seafood dishes like Wood Fired Croatian Mussels: Dagnje na Buzaru, Chargrilled Oysters, and Barbecued BBQ Shrimp.
My wife also loves to pair it with another glass or 2 of Spanish Red Sangria. No judgement here!

Apples, oranges, blackberries, and blueberries all work well in a red sangria by adding sweetness to the drink, without being overly sour.
