Protein: Ahi Tuna
Origin: Asian, Japanese
Method: Flat top or Stove Top
Jump to RecipeThis recipe combines 2 of my absolutely favorite things: Seared ahi tuna, and tacos. After a brief marinade, we perfectly sear our ahi tuna then fill wonton wrappers with the seared rare ahi, green onions, and some homemade wasabi sauce. The wonton tacos are then given a quick fry to crisp them up. These fried Ahi Wonton tacos make a great appetizer or can be eaten as a main course.

Making the Ahi Tuna Wonton Tacos with Wasabi Sauce
Selecting the best ahi tuna
For these Ahi tuna tacos, you want to be certain to select high quality tuna. If you are searing only to rare, look for tuna that is labeled as sushi quality. Try to avoid tuna that is dull in color or where the muscles appear to be flaking or separating. This can be a sign that the tuna is not at its freshest. As always, if it does not pass the smell test, don't use it!
Prepare the Ahi Tuna marinade
To make the marinade for the Ahi Tuna Tacos you will need the following: soy sauce, olive oil, honey, sesame oil, sesame seeds, minced ginger, rice wine vinegar, and red pepper flakes.
Combine the marinade ingredients in a bowl or plastic bag. Add the ahi tuna steaks and marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Prepare the Wasabi Sauce
To make the Wasabi Sauce for the Ahi Tuna Tacos you will need:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 avocado
- 2 teaspoons wasabi powder
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
- ½ teaspoon salt
For a spicier sauce you can increase the wasabi powder to 3 teaspoons. If you can't find wasabi powder you can also use prepared wasabi, but it will be quite a bit more work to get it to mix evenly. If needed you can also purchase wasabi powder on Amazon.
Combine the wasabi sauce ingredients and refrigerate until needed.
Cooking the Ahi Wonton Tacos
Now it is time to sear your tuna. Remove the tuna from the marinade and shake off access. We like to coat the tuna with toragashi seasoning at this point for a little extra flavor, but this is completely optional.
Next, preheat your grill to medium high to high heat (400-500 degrees). These ahi tuna tacos are a great appetizer to make on a griddle or grill. For this recipe we used our Cooking Steel over our Breeo fire pit. Any flat top surface will work such as a Blackstone or placha. If cooking inside, you can use a heavy bottomed pan such as a cast iron pan.
Sear the tuna steaks for about 90 seconds per side (for rare). Cook longer, flipping every 60 seconds if you would like your tuna cooked more well done.
Remove the tuna and cut into slices.
Add slices of seared tuna, green onion and wasabi sauce to the wonton wrappers. Next fold into tacos and oil your cooking surface well.
Next, sear the wonton tacos for about 30 seconds per side, until crispy.
Serving the Ahi Tuna Wonton Tacos
Remove the Ahi Wonton Tacos from the grill and serve with additional wasabi sauce, hoisin sauce, and green onions.
As part of an Asian inspired meal the tuna tacos go perfectly with Flat Top Chicken Fried Rice or some Japanese Teppanyaki.
